  • Peter and Jasmine Croll’s paper was selected for citation and inclusion in the 2007 Yearbook of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). The yearbook represents “the most original, excellent state-of-the-art research in the area of health and biomedical informatics of the past year”. This paper was the only paper from Australia to be selected under the best papers category where 35 papers were selected for inclusion as the best internationally with half of these top-tier papers originating from North America to including, for example, the prestigious Stanford and Harvard Universities. Jasmine Croll's original work, which contributed 50% of this publication, was specifically identified in their citation to include the 'adoption of information technologies' and the 'usability' aspects of Heath Information Systems. The following is the citation in the Yearbook summary that endorses this paper which originally appeared in the International Journal for Medical Informatics.

Investigating risk exposure in e-health systems
    Int J Med Inform 2007;76(5-6):460-5

“The hindrances to the adoption of information technologies include traditionally cultural aspects and resistance to changes and innovation, but also the costs and threats for privacy. On the technical aspect, interoperability and maturity are also usual causes discussed. The original approach of Peter and Jasmine Croll, in their paper entitled “Investigating risk exposure in e-health systems”, is therefore of particular interest, as they propose an integrated model aiming at providing a framework to help build trustworthy solutions. The method proposed focuses on the identification of pertinent issues that determine the risk exposure of a given system. An important result of their work relates to the interdependency of factors influencing the safety of the system. The QUiPS (Quality, Usability, Privacy and Safety) model provides a framework that helps identification of the causes that could lead to a safety incident and demonstrates their interdependencies. A valuable point of their work is the practical outcomes that have been validated on two large Australian projects.”

24th - 26th October 2006 – National e-Health Privacy and Security Symposium ehPASS ’06, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia

ehPASS’06 regarded as a great success
The ehPASS’06 event recently held in Brisbane was regarded as very successful in meeting its objects. At this first National symposium event we attracted over 70 delegates from all states in Australia plus international visitors. The event ran over two days with several Key note presentations, invited talks from industry and healthcare practitioners and presentation of refereed research papers. The consensus was that ehPASS should be run in 2007 and an application to run this concurrently with Medinfo will be submitted. As a testimonial to the event from Cathy Clutton, Executive Director of the NHMRC, who was kind enough to volunteer the following endorsement:

Dear Peter

Just a note to say how informative and valuable I found the symposium this week.

I was pleased to hear you talking about a 2007 event - as somebody who has been responsible for two national conferences I know this is a difficult task. I'm not sure how you publicised the symposium this year but I was surprised that nobody from the Commonwealth government Department of Health and Ageing with responsibility for electronic-health (etc) attended.

Perhaps you could target them especially next year, a speaker even?

I noticed that two speakers spoke about research issues and human research ethics committees. At the NHMRC we have a keen interest in privacy and research - this may also be a spot for a speaker next year.

Anyway, just wanted to say thank you and how much I enjoyed the sessions.

I got a lot out of the two days.

Cathy

Photos of the event can be located here. I will keep you informed of future developments. Thank you to everyone who attended and making this a worthwhile experience.
